WHY
I MAKE THIS FILM:
I want to make a film that's personal yet with a possible
universal and niche commercial appeal. DRIFT is essentially a coming-of-age
story wrapped in a bittersweet relationship drama about one's search
for passion and deep yearning for connection. DRIFT is also a drama
about how one falls with best intentions under the flux of human
emotions and relationships.
|
|
| VISION:
DRIFT will be shot with a mini-DV camcorder on digital video.
It will then be transferred onto Digital Beta, cut on a non-linear
system, on-line on Digi Beta and transferred onto 35mm film, its final
format. Seeing the commercial viability of CELEBRATION and drawing
from my own background of videomaking (which was how I got started
making films), I intend to make a compelling film on a shoe-string
budget with a video camera that can create a vision akin to a personal/relationship-driven
movie. |
|
| STYLE
OF PHOTOGRAPHY:
Aside from directing, I will also be shooting the project as
I want the video camera to be a living character, an eye that will
bring the audience to the various angles and niches that a bigger,
more traditional film camera or photography style does not accommodate. |
|
| MEDIUM/CLOSE:
DRIFT will be composed of primarily medium to close-up shots
to tell a personal story. Tighter shots are also visually more efficient
and dynamic within the limited resolution of digital video. |
|
| PRACTICAL
LIGHTING:
DRIFT will be shot primarily with available lighting and enhanced
practical lighting to create a neo-realistic atmosphere. |
| |
| HIGH
CONTRAST LIGHTING: I will experiment with high contrast
lighting against the low latitude of video to create a dynamic composition
with a lot of over exposure and whiteness against darkness. I DO NOT
WANT IT LOOK LIKE FILM. |
| |
| HAND
HELD CAMERA ONLY: The camera will
be primarily hand-held to create a free floating and dynamic camera
eye, sometimes more shaky, other times stable. There will be no stationary
tripod shots. The camera is always fluid and free, hence DRIFT. |
